I would like to join you in extending greetings to the working class on the successful organization and conduct of the All India Strike on February 28, 2012 published in the March 1-15, 2012 issue of MEL. I gather that the strike was a resounding success and has sent a clear message that the working class is fed up with the bourgeois led programme of liberalization and privatization and the working class has put forward the demand for nationalization and privatization. I understand that this sent out a chord that resonated with the millions of workers in central and state enterprises and youth and employees of all vital sectors of the economy.
To my mind, the issue that is now clearly taking shape in the consciousness of the millions and in the working class is the demand for their just economic rights. Through the colonial era and in the post-independence era, if there is one thing that is common to the experience of all, except the smallest minority, it is the denial of economic justice. First under the pretext of `socialistic' pattern of society, the masses were hoodwinked into thinking that their economic needs would be met. Using this as the backbone, the bourgeoisie developed enough muscle to use the collapse of the bi-polar division of the world to declare the end of planned economy and gave the mantra of liberalization and privatization as the panacea to the ills of the country.
Indeed, the last twenty years has seen the fattening of these fat cats at an unprecedented rate, with the vast immiseration of the rest. Events such as the All India Strike provide an excellent opportunity to Communists to bring the issue of denial of economic rights to the centrestage. Let us unite around this key issue and carry forward the struggle to bring about economic justice.
