Response to labour Minister ji

Sir,

Sir,

I am writing to thank you for carrying the article entitled `Who is blocking industrial growth, Labour Ministerji?’ in the July 15-31, 2014 issue of MEL. This article is a fine piece of writing written in response to the comment from the Union Labour Minister, who has said that unions should not block the growth of industrial growth, and further that the role of his ministry would be to harmonize the interests of industry and labour. The article correctly points out that such claims are irrational and historical and seek to confuse the existing situation.

Such statements are broadcast day in and day out by the media and serves the interests of the bourgeoisie. The reality, on the other hand is the exact opposite. The state, of which the Ministry of Labour is an integral part, is one of the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. It is not possible to harmonize the interests of labour and industry under the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie.

The article correctly points out the following:

  • that industry grows only through the combined labour of workers; in fact there is no conflict between industry and labour, but only between capitalist owners and workers,
  • that there are two contending clases, which are the owners and the workers,
  • it not the level of wages that determines who belongs where, but whether or not a worker controls his or her labour or not,
  • that there is savage exploitation of workers,
  • there is a vast polaization of wealth in the country, especially due to the programme of liberalization and privatization, and the demand of distribution of wealth that is generated is termed as `roadblock to growth’,
  • that it is the capital-centric approach that is the motive of the economy,
  • pressure to keep wages low that causes the crises of capitalist over-production.

The article points out that what is needed is a human-centric approach for which workers must fight, and that today the dominance of finance capital that constrains the growth of industry. Of significance is that fact that the Labour Minister is pushing what the capitalists want is not a feature of the BJP government and that this has been a feature of past governments as well. The article concludes with the observation that what is required is a State of workers, and peasants and the entire population, according to a social plans.

I am writing to second the call of the CGPI to the unions to unite and step up the struggle.

Sincerely,
A. Narayan
