Speaking to the Press, S.Raghavan of Lok Raj Sangathan said that the campaign is being conducted jointly by various organisations. 28 years have passed since the Sikh genocide. However, there has been no justice. This genocide, the subsequent demolition of the Babri Masjid and the communal massacre in 1992 and the Gujarat genocide in 2002 have raised several questions. Do we have any control over our representatives when they violate their raj dharma of protecting the people? Do we have any control over the government servants, when the police who are responsible for protecting us, turn their backs on us and instead protect the murderers and rapists? Do we have any control over our legal and judicial system, which has systematically denied us justice and allowed itself to be manipulated according to the political interests of the party in power?
On this occasion, he made public a petition to the Prime Minister signed by Justice V R Krishna Iyer demanding justice. The campaign to obtain signatures will be launched in Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and other cities along with Delhi and Punjab.
He said that as part of the campaign, there will be a photo exhibition that will be flagged off from the Jalianwalla bagh on 21st October, which plans to pass through various places in Punjab before arriving in Delhi on 26th October.
There will be a candle light vigil on Parliament Street on 3rd November.
He announced that a seminar would be held on a law necessary to punish those who are responsible for organising such genocides, with the focus on the issue of "command responsibility", at the Indian Law Institute on November 4. The seminar will be presided over by retd.Justice Hosbet Suresh. Senior advocate, Shri.H.S. Phoolka elaborated that according to official estimates, 3000 Sikhs were massacred on the streets of Delhi. 28 years later, far from trying those responsible for organising the massacres, they are not even identified as accused in this crime.
Another member of the campaign, Shri.Jarnail Singh added that not only have those criminals not been punished, those responsible for the 1984 genocide have been given Ministerial posts, those in the police and bureaucracy who have blocked the course of justice have been honoured with promotions. Representatives of Bachpan Bachao Andolan and Socialist Yuvajavan Sabha also addressed the Press Conference. The Campaign for Justice for 1984 speaks for the fact that the guilty have not been punished to date and the Campaign will be carried on till the guilty are punished.
