Implementation of Minimum wages of Rs.18000 per month across the country, and indexing the same to inflation, halt to privatization of public resources/enterprises, implementation of pension payment of Rs.3000 per month, bringing all workers under social insurance, halting contractualisation of labour and paying equal wages for equal work, halting labour “reforms” that are against the interests of workers, making it mandatory to register trade unions within a period of 45 days, halting FDI in Railways, Defence and Insurance, controlling inflation, etc., are some of the 12 demands that the trade unions have been fighting on across the country since the last so many years.
According to reports received from all over the country, trade unions had jointly demonstrated and courted arrests in several state capitals as well as in districts.
In Delhi, the workers occupied the space between Bank of Baroda and the police station on Parliament Street. Workers from several sectors were present at the demonstration. All of them gathered at the Bank, took the placards with their demands, and raising slogans they marched militantly towards Parliament only to be arrested by the Parliament Street Police near the police station.
Addressing the protestors, Com. Santosh Kumar, leader of Mazdoor Ekta Committee said that on this day the trade unions were unitedly carrying out satyagraha against the government’s anti-worker, anti-peasant and anti-national policies. Modi government is implementing those policies that the Congress government implemented post 1990. In order to continue its rule, the bourgeoisie changes parties from time to time and with new slogans each time, sometimes replacing the Congress with the BJP and at other times, with some other parties. As the Modi government is getting exposed, the bourgeoisie is preparing the Congress Party as the alternative. Our judiciary, constitution, parliament, police and army, etc., are all instruments of the State, helping to consolidate the rule of the bourgeoisie. In conclusion, Com. Santosh pointed out that changing parties is not going to ensure the emancipation of workers and peasants. Workers and peasants will lead the task of replacing the present State of 150 capitalists by a new state. Such a state will guarantee the security and prosperity of the workers and peasants.
Among others who addressed the demonstration were AITUC’s comrade Amarjeet Kaur, CITU’s comrades Tapan Sen, AICCTU’s comrade Santosh Rai, INTUC’s Sunil, AIUTUC’s R.K.Sharma, Hind Mazdoor Sabha’s com. Rajendra Singh, UTUC’s comrade Montu and ICTU’s comrade Narendra.
According to reports, the All-Haryana Employees Union was joined by several dozen other trade unions in various districts of the state in the demonstration and courting arrest.
