On 14 May Trade unions including AITUC, CITU, Mazdoor Ekta Committee, AITUC, AIUTUC, and AIFTU extended their support to the students of JNU in their struggle to annul the harsh punishment imposed on them.  They sat on Dharna at Jantar Mantar and went on a one day hunger strike.

Workers from various sectors and a delegation of students from JNU participated in the sit-in and hunger strike.

In the memorandum sent to the President of India on behalf of the trade unions, it was stated that “we are deeply concerned about the turn of events and systematic attacks on this premier institution of learning. In the latest development the high powered committee had made shameful recommendations, according to which many students have been fined a heavy penalty of 10000-20000 rupees, three students have been rusticated, one student expelled, two students asked to vacate the hostel, while two ex-students have been barred from entering the campus.  This action in our opinion is completely anti-social.”

The further stated that the action by the high powered committee and the university administration was illogical, shameful and an attempt to crush the student movement for just demands. The trade unions along with various concerned citizens condemn this unjust act of the university administration and demand that it must be revoked immediately.

In the memorandum the trade unions appealed to the President of India to do justice and revoke the punishment meted to them. Comrade Dharmendra Kumar, Comrade Virendra Gaud, Comrade Bijju Nayak, Comrade Santosh Rai, Comrade Mamager Chaurasia, and Comrade Anivesh Das addressed the demonstration.
