A show of working class unity

I am writing in response to the call of the CC of the CGPI as we approach May Day of 2017, and which was carried in the April 16-30, 2017 issue of MEL entitled `An attack on one is an attack on all! Build and strengthen the working class opposition to the capitalist offensive! In particular, I would like to join the chorus of outrage at the brutal and draconian sentence of life imprisonment on 13 Maruti-Suzuki workers in Gurgaon. I am reassured by the report on the resolution of the working class to fight for overturning these sentences and for the demand of reinstatement of those thrown out of their jobs on trumped up charges. Indeed, this represents an attack on the entire working class, and a just and principled fight is an absolute necessity. It also is an opportunity for the working class consciousness to be sharpened since this amounts to a threat to the entire working class as to what is in store for it should it stand up for the rights of the working class.

Nevertheless, there is a united demand for the end to this injustice and a sharpening of the struggle, which brings hope to all of us in the revolutionary camp.

As we approach May Day, it is more and more apparent that there are huge storms gathering in the life and death struggle between the bourgeoisie and the working class world over. It is the irreconcilable differences between these two that has resulted in the ongoing epic struggle unfolding in front of our eyes.

This struggle is imperative since the gruesome and inhuman capitalist system stands exposed in the eyes of the people world over. As it fights for its survival, the alternative of socialism becomes more and more a desirable goal for the working class and the peoples across the world. In India, the situation is worsening day by day under the rule of the BJP which is a party of the big monopoly houses, and the activities of the Government are there for everyone to see. These include paving the path to the elimination of protection to workers, and to creating the conditions of inhuman exploitation and accruing of super-profits for the biggest monopolies. Many laws have been amended and will continue to be as the Government takes the working class into a bottomless pit of exploitation and destruction.

It is in this bottomless pit that a new society will take birth to take the people of India and the working class out of the grim situation in which they find themselves. The occasion of May Day, which is celebrated world over, except in the USA, where it was born and where the labour movement has been cruelly subjugated, is an occasion on which the working class reminds itself of its historical mission. Its work is to consolidate itself and strengthen itself through organization and mass action and a conscious action plan.

I join the CC in its call to `…organise to make May Day 2017 and unprecedent show of strength and unity of the Indian working class!’

Sincerely,

A. Narayan, Bangalore
