The AITUC committee of Samastipur district in Bihar organised a mass rally and meeting at the Collectorate against the amendment to the labour laws. Construction workers, jute mill workers and workers from various sectors, participated in the protest with beedi workers who were present in large numbers.
Addressing the meeting, speakers severely condemned the changes to the labour law. They pointed out that handing over enterprises and resources in the public sector to private capitalists has an impact on the workers in the organised and unorganised sector in the country.
Concluding the meeting, a 5-member representative body of the workers submitted a petition to the Prime Minister through the district collector. The petition demanded the withdrawal of the amendment to the labour laws. They also demanded that beedi workers should be paid the second instalment of housing allowance under the RIHS-2007, they should be given at least the minimum wages, and provided with identity card, GST should not be applied to Beedi Workers Welfare Fund, and Rameshwar Jute Mills should be reopened, etc.
