The victory of the BJP in the Assembly election has been followed by savage attacks against communists and trade union activists in Tripura. Offices of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have been looted and set on fire. Statues of Lenin have been physically attacked and vandalized.

The events in Tripura have been immediately followed by sectarian hate campaigns in other parts of the country. In Tamil Nadu, a statue of Periyar, known for his crusade against the caste system, has been attacked. It has been followed by an act of humiliating some Brahmins outside a temple. Attacks have also taken place on a statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in West Bengal and Bhim Rao Ambedkar in Uttar Pradesh. A systematic effort is going on to inflame passions and set people against each other on the basis of political and ideological beliefs, caste, religion, appearance or way of life.

Communist Ghadar Party condemns all these attacks on the people and their beliefs. The spreading of sectarian hatred and terror is part and parcel of the criminal politics of divide and rule practiced by those in power.

It is the rulers who organize to set people at each other’s throats. They then carry out the lying propaganda that people and their beliefs are to blame. It is claimed that the attack on communists and on Lenin’s statue in Tripura is an expression of “pent up anger” of the people. However, facts show that the attacks were spearheaded by BJP leaders under the watchful eyes of the central and state security forces. That the Governor of Tripura has justified these attacks through his tweets on social media shows that they have the full backing of those in power.

The root cause of the problem lies in the fact that the existing capitalist system headed by the monopoly houses cannot provide for the people. Those in power have to resort to criminal methods of diversion and division of the people in order to maintain the existing order.

All the problems facing our people have their source in the oppressive and exploitative rule of the capitalist class, headed by about 150 monopoly houses. These monopoly houses are hell bent on pursuing the anti-worker, anti-peasant, anti-social and anti-national program of globalization through liberalization and privatization. They rely on one or another of their trusted parties to implement this program while marketing false promises to the people. They relied mainly on the Congress Party in the past. They are relying mainly on the BJP headed by Narendra Modi at the present time.

While colonial rule came to an end more than 70 years ago, the politics of divide and rule practiced by the British rulers has not come to an end. We cannot afford to forget how the central Government headed by the Congress Party deployed the Army to attack a place of worship like the Golden Temple in 1984. We cannot forget how both the BJP and the Congress Party colluded to destroy Babri Masjid. Nor can we forget the genocide in Gujarat under the watch of the BJP. All such acts have served to create a climate of violence and terror and keep the toiling majority of people divided and terrorized.

The recent acts of spreading sectarian hatred and terror serve the same purpose. They serve to incite conflicts among the people and justify the unleashing of violence and terror against different groups of people.

The ruling class is unleashing anarchy and violence so as to wreck the unity and solidarity of our people. Communist Ghadar Party calls upon all Indians of conscience to condemn all forms of sectarian violence and hate campaigns. Let us oppose the use of force to settle political and ideological differences. Let us reject and defeat the politics of divide and rule. Let us unite against state terrorism. Let us defend universal human and democratic rights.

Let us wage the struggle against sectarian violence and terror with the perspective and aim of establishing a State that would guarantee prosperity and protection for all. Such a State would guarantee the inviolability of the right to conscience. It would protect the right of every person to his or her religious beliefs and forms of worship, as well as the right not to believe in any religion. It would protect everyone’s right to express one’s opinion on any problem affecting society, without any fear or hesitation. It would mete out exemplary punishment to anyone who uses religion, caste, ideology or any other justification to violate the right of any member of society.
