Preparations for All India General Strike in full swing: Workers’ organisations hold rallies and meetings

Preparations for the January 8 All India General Strike of workers are in full swing.

On 5th and 6th December 2019, tens of thousands of construction workers from different states of the country gathered in front of Parliament to protest against the attacks on their hard won rights. They resolved in one voice to vigorously work for the success of the All India General Strike of workers on 8th January 2020.

On 28th November, workers of BPCL, HPCL, and other public sector petroleum companies struck work in protest against the decision of the government to privatize BPCL and HPCL. Thousands of workers took out a long march through the streets of Mumbai on that day. All the unions of petroleum workers have decided to actively participate in the January 8 All India General Strike.

As we go to the press, Mazdoor Ekta Lehar has received reports that state and district level conventions of trade unions and workers organisations have already been organised in the majority of states. Tens of thousands of trade union activists have participated in these conventions. They are taking the message of the strike to workers, peasants and all working people right through to the tehsil and village level.

Apart from the state level representatives of central trade unions, representatives of Mazdoor Ekta Committee as well as representatives of federations of workers of railways, banks, defence sector, insurance, transport workers, etc. have participated in these conventions.

Mazdoor Ekta Committee organised a meeting of its activists on 17th November, 2019, as part of preparations for the General Strike. The meeting reviewed the ongoing preparations of the working class for the General Strike and resolved to redouble our efforts throughout the country for the success of the strike.

As part of this campaign, the Mazdoor Ekta Committee has brought out a pamphlet, a Call to the workers, highlighting the long standing demands of the workers which have been put forward by the central trade unions. The Call explains why the amendments to the labour laws are thoroughly anti worker and pro capitalist. It argues why the privatization program of the capitalist class is not only anti worker, it is also anti-social and anti-national. The Call explains why the demands of the working class are entirely just and fulfilling them is in the general interest of society. It appeals to workers, peasants and all working people to unite and work to make the General Strike a resounding success.

Thousands of copies of the pamphlet produced by Mazdoor Ekta Committee are being distributed amongst workers in the industrial townships, at factory gates, in workers colonies, as well as amongst the working people at large.

Activists of the MEC have been addressing many different sections of the working people— petroleum sector workers, loco drivers, guards and trackmen of the Indian railways, road transport workers, government employees, government school teachers, university teachers, construction workers, airport workers, hospital workers, etc. In these meetings, they have been explaining the significance of the proposed General Strike and the necessity to make it a resounding success.

As we go to the press, Mazdoor Ekta Lehar is receiving daily updates from trade unions and workers organisations in different regions of the country about the strike preparations.

MEL calls upon all its readers to take the Call of Mazdoor Ekta Committee widely to all sections of the working people of the country.
